The Art of Return: Creative Exploration for Rosh Hashanah | The Jewish Studio Project

  • Melrose District, Los Angeles (map)

This program will use the Jewish Studio Process—a unique methodology that builds creative capacity by combining art therapy practices with a reimagined approach to Jewish learning. The program welcomes all participants regardless of art-making experience or Jewish background. Participants will move through a four-step process: studying accessible texts related to the themes of Rosh Hashanah in pairs and then discussing in a full group ("Inquiry"), writing a personal intention ("Intention"), creating art through any medium while following pleasure and curiosity ("Creative Exploration"), and engaging in stream-of-consciousness reflection writing about their work and experience ("Reflection"). Throughout, a skilled facilitator will guide the process, creating space for both individual discovery and collective exploration of High Holiday themes of return and forgiveness. A note - we plan to offer the same methodology for Passover, High Holidays, and Chanukah. This approach allows us to tailor the text study and experience to each holiday's unique wisdom--exploring liberation and renewal at Passover, return and forgiveness during the High Holidays, and light and resilience at Chanukah, while maintaining the consistent container of the Jewish Studio Process.
